I ended up chasing down this rabbit hole because I maintain a healthy air quality in the rabbitry. I absolutely cannot stand allowing my rabbits to breathe ammonia, and that ammonia smell means lost nitrogen. Fortunately I have local access to inexpensive pelleted aspen bedding.
Removing the moisture, and/or dropping the pH of the urine will stop the nitrogen from off gassing as ammonia. When rabbit urine hits the pellets, the aspen sawdust begins absorbing the moisture immediately.
The following is my research toward the best methods for extraction of the rabbit urine from the aspen bedding, with the end goal being a high quality plant nutrient.
Starting with the tail end of the conversation I had with Gemini…
While this is the approximate process for the target end goal, I’m currently limited to soaking and coarse filtration at the moment (insert link to post following developments on this process HERE). I’ll be using the same molasses/gallon ratio, starting with 1/4 cup per gallon.
